Double the celebration as twins mark 90th birthdays

A DOUBLE celebration saw a brother and sister marking their 90th birthdays together.

Twins Joe Riley and Marie Chapman celebrated their special day surrounded by friends and family at the Foresters Arms in West Sleekburn, Choppington.

The pair, who were born in Barrington in 1922, enjoyed a party with more than 100 guests coming to wish them well, including Joe’s ex-forces pals from the Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Joe, who now lives in Church Avenue, West Sleekburn, Choppington, served as a crew member on a Royal Navy landing craft during the Second World War D-Day Normandy landings.

After the war, he worked in the coal industry and was employed underground at the Netherton, Bedlington and Ellington collieries mainly as a coal-cutting operative.

Joe is now an active member of the Newcastle Normandy Veterans Association and the Royal British Legion and re-visits Normandy every June to take part in the commemorations.

Marie is a resident at the Little Sisters Of The Poor St Joseph’s Home in Westmorland Road, Newcastle.
