Driver killed in Northumberland crash; police plea for witnesses

A man died in a crash on the A697 in Northumberland yesterday, police have confirmed.

At around 4.50pm, Northumbria Police were called to a collision between a white Kia Optima and a HGV on the A697 between Longframlington and Longhorsley.

Emergency services attended and the 40-year-old driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger was taken to hospital by air ambulance but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The A697 was closed for four hours to allow officers to investigate the incident and recover the vehicles involved.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the collision, which took place on the southbound carriageway 300 metres south of the C135 road to Todburn, to get in touch.
