DVD tells story of north’s pit ponies

RARE footage of pit ponies used in mines across south east Northumberland is featured in a new DVD.

The Coal Miner’s Best Friend tells how the ponies used to be employed at collieries across the county, including those at Newbiggin, North Seaton and Bedlington.

The DVD features footage dating back to 1910 and the last pit ponies in the country being brought to the surface at Ellington in 1994.

The film was made by Choppington’s Six Townships Community History Group. It costs £5.49 and is available via www.sixtownships.org.uk and at Al’s Superstore in Laburnum Terrace, Ashington, and Star Video in Front Street, Newbiggin.
