Elderly man who died in A1 crash is named

AN elderly man killed in a crash on the A1 in Northumberland has been named.

Police have named the 80-year-old man who was killed in the collision on the A1 in Northumberland on Friday, December 30, as Eric Smith, from Simonside Avenue, Choppington.

At 1.10pm on Friday, December 30, there was a two car collision on the A1, northbound, near to the Swarland junction.

Police believe that at the time of the crash the Ford Fiesta, which was being driven by Mr Smith, was travelling away from the junction and the Citroen Berlingo van was travelling north when they collided.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended the scene and Mr Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A passenger in the Fiesta suffered minor injuries as did the driver of the Berlingo.

The road was closed for around four hours to allow for the vehicles to be recovered and collision investigation to take place.

Enquiries into the collision are ongoing and police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
