Elderly woman has purse stolen in shop

An elderly woman had her purse stolen from her handbag while out shopping.

The 75-year-old woman had been in the Scope charity shop, in Station Road, Ashington, when the incident happened at 1pm on Monday.

An unknown person stole her purse from her handbag and made off unseen.

Acting Inspector Michelle Caisley said: “Officers are investigating this crime and are asking for help from the public to identify the person responsible.

“We’d also ask people to be vigilant and keep a close watch on their purse or wallet when out shopping. Please make sure any bags are kept zipped or securely fastened to help prevent any opportunist crime.”

Police are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, is asked to contact police.
