Ex-footballers to aid fundraising

Former members of a football team are being asked to rally in support of a player whose son broke his neck in a tragic accident.

Les Robson, from Cramlington, who played for Shepherd Offshore football team from 1988 to 1994, heard how athlete Drew Graham, 30, became paralysed from the chest down after he dived into a creek in America while training for a competition.

Drew’s father Gary, 57, played alongside Les in the Tyneside Football League and is now hoping to get in touch with other ex-players as they look to raise money to support Drew following the accident last September.

A talk-in has been arranged with former World Cruiserweight boxing champion Glenn McCrory and veteran journalist John Gibson, for Monday, January 26.

Les said: “As a youngster Drew came along to the matches and got involved in the pre-match kick around, so lots of the lads knew him from back then.”

“A number of the North Tyneside lads retired from Shepherd Offshore and formed Marden Milan and we played together in the Over-35s league for three seasons.

“It would be great to see former Shepherd Offshore and Marden Milan players at the show so we can catch up and help a former teammate.”

The Writer and the Fighter will be held at The Stand Comedy Club in Newcastle’s High Bridge Street on Monday, January 26.

Tickets are priced at £10 and can be reserved by calling The Stand on (0191) 300 9700.
