A sailor who has been detained in India for more than a year is hoping to get the best birthday present by being allowed to leave.
Nick Dunn, of Ashington, has been held in India since October 2013 after being part of a 36-man crew arrested for the alleged illegal possession of weapons in Indian waters while working for AdvanFort.
Nick was released on bail last March on strict bail conditions before the charges were then quashed in July.
But an appeal was lodged by police, leaving Nick without his passport or being able to return home.
Now lawyers are making another bid to get Nick home as he prepares to celebrate his 29th birthday on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of the High Court hearing on Friday, Nick’s sister Lisa said: “It would be the best birthday present ever for Nick if they gave their passports back, he isn’t going to make it home in time for his birthday now but knowing that it has been issued would be fantastic.”
