Works to build the new Lidl store in Blyth are getting under way.
North East based construction and facilities management specialists Taemar Ltd secured the contract for the project that will see the supermarket firm replace its existing outlet on the former Bates Colliery site on Cowpen Road with a building double the size using additional land at the site.
Up to 200 construction-related jobs will be created throughout the build process and 10 new jobs will be created at the branch on completion.
The new layout will be 2,470sq m, including a sales area of 1,424sq m. There will be 134 car parking spaces and seven parking spaces for those with disabled badges, as well as dedicated parent-and-child parking.
It will be a ‘Lidl of the Future’ store, which has been designed to maximise efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.
Taemar Ltd’s managing director, Rob Wilson said: “We’re delighted to be working with Lidl on what is an important development for Blyth and a significant contract win for our business.
“This announcement ma-rks a major step forward in the development of Taemar.
“We will be working with a number of key businesses on subcontract packages and are confident that well over 75 per cent of labour personnel will come from the Northumberland area, providing a significant boost to the local economy.”
