Staff at a firm in Ashington have readily come to the fore in a bid to raise funds for a north east charity.
Workers at Arefco Special Products Limited on the Jubilee Industrial Estate recently completed a 12 miles walk whilst others completed a mini olympics – and another employee is doing a sponsored slim.
Last week, they handed over a cheque for £1,590 to Margaret Cockburn from Down Syndrome North East – but are hoping to swell the amount by another £1,000.
Gary Burton, managing director of Arefco, said: “Every year we try to get together as a management team and do something that reminds us that there is more to life than our 9am to 5pm jobs.
“We try to get out and do an activity and put that to good use by generating sponsorship for charities and local causes that mean something to us – like having a personal connection. We have raised funds for Cancer Research and a couple of local respite care facilities last year and this time we chose Down Syndrome - and we have a personal connection with all of those.
“The cheque is for £1,590 but the actual total when we look at the just giving page is well over £2,000, and we are absolutely thrilled to bits with that.”
Margaret Cockburn committee member for Down Syndrome North East, added: “It is a marvellous amount of money to receive.
“We are all volunteers, so all of the money raised goes to subsidise activities for people with Down Syndrome and their families in the region.”
