A FIRST ever hedge laying competition took place at Ashington Woods recently.
Teams had to put down a five-yard section of hawthorn at the main entrance to the site, watched over by judge Andrew Adams, president of the national Hedge Laying Society.
Jasper Prachek won the open class while local competitors Darren Kinghorn and Keith Simonsen gained fourth in the novice class, which was won by James Stafford with Jamie Dines second.
Prize money was donated by the Friends of Ashington Woods, and gift vouchers by the Ashington branch of B&Q.
The judge praised Groundwork North East and the Friends of Ashington Woods, and local hedge layer David Boyson for organising the event.
