Warnings of flooding this weekend have led to the cancellation of a popular Christmas fair.

Ten thousand people were expected at the two-day Countryside Christmas Fair at Kirkley Hall, near Ponteland, on Saturday and Sunday.

But this afternoon Northumberland College cancelled the annual event amid warnings of flooding from the Met Office.
A college spokesman said: "We have been keeping a close eye on Met Office forecasts over the past week and monitoring them closely. During a final risk assessment of the site this afternoon, it was decided with great regret to cancel the event for the safety of all of those involved.

"The health and safety of our stallholders, visitors and staff is of paramount importance and it is with a heavy heart that we cancel an event, which has become a highlight of the Christmas season in Northumberland.

"The college would like to apologise to all those affected by this cancellation due to circumstances beyond our control."

The North East is subject to a yellow weather warning with 50-100mm of rain forecast for Saturday alone. Strong west to south westerly winds are also expected to cause disruption in exposed areas.

Heavy and persistent rain is expected to fall on ground, which is already saturated following several days of wet weather, which the college says would potentially make the fair untenable.
