An Ashington couple are set to net a big total in their latest fund-raising event after receiving great backing from a radio station and football club.

The third football game and fun family activities organised by Helen Dickinson and her husband Neil will take place on Sunday and it will be the biggest yet.

The main attraction at Woodhorn Lane, Ashington AFC’s ground, on the day is a Koast Radio XI v Stephen Harmison XI match and the radio staff and football team members have helped to contribute to the £3,200 that has already been raised.

Funds will go to the palliative care unit at Wansbeck General Hospital – unit staff looked after Helen’s late mother Margaret Stewart.

The Stephen Harmison XI includes Gary Bennett (ex-Sunderland), Andy Campbell (ex-Middlesbrough) and The North East Football Show presenters Anthony Rutherford and Les Langley.

Helen said: “We’re thrilled to have raised so much money so far. We’ve already beaten the £3,100 total from last year.

“We can’t thank Koast Radio enough as its support has been fantastic and Ashington AFC has also been brilliant, particularly general manager Dave Henderson.”

The match has a 3pm kick off. Gates open at 11.30am as the event also includes stalls, carnival rides and a samba band. Tickets cost £3 for ad-ults and £1.50 for children.
