Free courses will promote cycling

People keen to get out and enjoy the summer sun can take advantage of a series of free cycling courses over the next few months in south east Northumberland.

There are four skill levels to choose from with training sessions for beginners through to experienced cyclists tackling rush-hour rides.

There are even courses designed for families wishing to enjoy cycling together.

Leading the sessions, on behalf of Go Smarter Northumberland, is Michael Halliday, 47, a cycle training instructor with organisers Cycle Experience, part of the TTC group.

Michael, from Cramlington, said: “Whatever your ability or cycling experience I can guarantee you will learn something useful with these courses.

“We can help absolute beginners get the confidence to try cycling for the first time or provide more expert riders with the awareness to cycle on busy roads safely, legally and efficiently.”

The sessions are open to anyone who lives, works or studies in south east Northumberland and take place at the Sporting Club in Cramlington.

Classes last approximately two hours and take place on Saturdays and occasionally weekday evenings.

Michael added: “Cycling is great for your mental and physical health and with the days getting warmer now is the perfect time to start.

“And even if the summer is a complete wash out we will be providing tips and advice on cycling in the rain and the sort of protective gear to wear.”

There are more than 30 different sessions to choose from, taking place between now and mid-July, with more sessions and venues to be announced.

Sessions on Saturday, May 24, are: complete beginners 10am to noon; confidence booster level 1 10am to noon; confidence booster level 2 noon to 2pm; confident rider level 3 noon to 2pm; and family 10am to noon.

Then on Thursday, May 29, complete beginners and confidence booster level 1 are from 6pm to 8pm.
