A fundraiser from the county has surpassed the milestone of raising £20,000 for charity.
Since 1991, Shirley Sanderson from Bedlington, has fundraised for St Oswald’s Hospice – through selling beanie toys, raffling off hampers, hosting annual themed events and more.
And following a successful funraising disco in Bedlington, she topped the £20,000 mark.
Shirley, who owns owner of The Lounge Hair and Beauty in Bedlington, said: “I first got involved with the Hospice when I went to do someone’s hair there.
“It was a lady’s last wish to have her hair styled and I really enjoyed being there and being able to provide that for her. I was really impressed with the place and that started me off wanting to do more.
“When I started fundraising, it was just a little get together at the back of my friend’s house and over the years it has just grown and grown.
“I love to give myself a challenge and it’s such a lovely charity to support.
“I support St Oswald’s because they offer care to everyone, not just those with cancer.”
Shirley’s latest event took place at the end of July at The Wharton Arms in Bedlington.
St Oswald’s fundraiser, Laura Elliot, said: “What Shirley has done for St Oswald’s is absolutely amazing.
“We can’t thank her enough. It just shows how one person can really help their community.
“She’s made a huge difference at the Hospice and is a true inspiration.”
