Geordie actor Tim Healy was back in town last week to officially switch on Ashington’s Christmas lights.

Tim, now best known for his roles in Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Benidorm, recalled affectionately how, in his younger days he used to be a comedian, often touring local venues.

“Ashington is a town really close to my heart as I often worked the clubs doing stand-up in the 1970s,” he said.

“I feel honoured to be invited to Ashington to switch on the lights, it’s a great town and this is a fantastic turnout.”

The event was organised by Ashington Town Team and Ashington Town Council with help from Northumberland YMCA, Northumberland County Council and Ashington Community Development Trust.

It included loads of activities building up to Tim’s guest appearance, from a festive market, mini-pony rides, costumed characters, to a lantern parade led by an artist-designed ‘pit pony’, music and fairground rides and late night shopping..

John Hall, chair of Ashington Town Team, said: “We are delighted Tim could join us to switch on the lights this year.

“He genuinely loves Northumberland and has a long standing connection with Ashington.”
