Retired vicar Rev David Johnson and his wife Doreen have celebrated 50 years of marriage with a service of thanksgiving at St Cuthbert’s Church in Bedlington.

To mark their golden anniversary, the couple renewed their vows before the Rev Derry Twomey who then reflected on the couple’s life together.

David and Doreen then took communion before inviting the congregation.

After the service, the couple were joined by family and friends for a reception in the Burdon Isle of the church, where everyone enjoyed refreshments.

Instead of gifts, the couple asked for donations be made to two charities.

One being the Urostomy Association, which helps people who are about to undergo or who have undergone surgery resulting in a urinary diversion, and the second, Practical Compassion for Destitute Children, a Bethlehem-based charity supporting needy Palestinian children.

The pair are delighted to announce that they raised more than £500.
