A GRANT has been secured to organise a new project to put artwork into pubs in Northumberland.
Newbiggin Arts Forum Ltd has been awarded funding from The Comic Relief Fund and the Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to organise Poems in Pubs.
Michael Brett, chairman of Newbiggin Writing Group, said: “The idea is to place framed poems in each public house in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea so that people who would not usually get to experience art are given chance to read local poetry.
“The group is pleased with this opportunity.
“We’re all passionate about writing in all its forms, whether it is poetry, prose or fiction. “The project allows us to showcase our passion and talent for writing to a wider audience and it’s an opportunity we were not going to pass up.
“The writing group, who meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Forum Gallery at 7pm, are a group of friendly local writers who look to make new members feel very welcome.”
Eddie Galvin, community arts development manager for Newbiggin Arts Forum, said: “We support all art forms in the community and the writing group is particularly active.
“I was impressed by the positive attitude and encouragement we got from all the local pubs and clubs and our thanks goes out to Comic Relief for the funding, the writers for their efforts and all the landlords who are making this possible.”
Poems in Pubs will run at least for a full year, and will place two new poems a month.
