Hardy souls take to the sea for dip

Hundreds of spectators braved the ice covered ground to enjoy the annual Newbiggin Boxing Day Dip.

The event this year was organised by Newbiggin lifeboat station, and is expected to raise more than £800 through sponsorship and donations along with refreshments that were served in the boathouse.

Almost 100 dippers sprinted into the icy Newbiggin bay while overhead a fly past from the passing RAF Sea King helicopter completed the spectacle.

Crowds on the beach looked on and offered encouragement as the dippers all eventually retreated from the cold sea.

A fancy dress competition was organised by the RNLI which was well subscribed and after careful consideration the three favourite costumes were worn by Ann Young, Ella Thomson and Lee Foster. They were presented with prizes for their costumes on the promenade.

The ‘Dip’ was initially launched and run successfully by the Ashington Lions since the 1980’s where it has grown into an established Newbiggin event that is watched by hundreds of locals and visitors alike as part of their annual festive celebrations.
