Honoured after dedicating six decades of his life to sport

A sport volunteer has been honoured for his work coaching youngsters in Ashington.

He was awarded a sword for his ‘Service to Sport’ by the City of Newcastle.

Fred’s name is now engraved on the sword alongside the likes of Sir Bobby Robson, Brendan Foster, Alan Shearer, Sir John Hall, and Jackie Milburn.

For more than 60 years Fred has dedicated his time to training with weights and the sport of Powerlifting, winning two Paralympic games medals.

Now he dedicates his time to coaching youngsters in the sport of powerlifting at the Parkhead Powersports Club, producing British, European, and World champions along the way.
