A shopper who went out for bananas came back with more than she bargained for when she gained a tropical ‘pet’.
Fafa Anczak was shopping in Blyth’s Lidl store when she spotted a strange bug on the bananas.
“I noticed an insect on my banana that I had never seen before, obviously thinking of health and safety I got hold of a member of staff to inform them so they could deal with this issue as the bug was clearly tropical and not from the UK,” she said.
“The staff wanted to release it outside, but I was worried about what potential damage it could do so I took it home.”
After doing some research, Fafa found the bug to be a banana cockroach, often found in Cuba, and has since kept the creature as a pet.
The 27-year-old said: “When I found out about them I saw that they make good pets, so I decided to keep him.”
Fafa has now named the tiny insect Simon.
“I’m not really a bug person but he is so slow, he just wants his banana and he’s happy. He’s the ideal pet really.”
A spokesperson for Lidl said: “We can confirm that a cockroach was found on a banana in our Blyth store by a customer.
“In the very rare occasion that this occurs, as always, our specialist contractor has been consulted with.”
