A Seghill ice hockey star has been awarded a £1,500 sponsorship from the Cramlington Wilko store, in Manor Walks Shopping Centre.

Abbie Thornton, 18, will use the sponsorship to fund her travel and equipment costs, including new hockey sticks and a kit bag.

Currently playing for Kingston Diamonds in the English Ice Hockey Association National Premier League, she has been a keen player for the past four years.

She keeps up her training while studying Sport and Exercise Therapy at Leeds Metropolitan University, and also represented Great Britain at the Winter World University Games in December.

The donation was made as part of Wilko’s Local Star initiative, which sponsors individuals who either have a special talent, are an inspiration to others or help in their local community.

Adele Sandland, Wilko store manager, said it was inspiring to hear of the amazing talent in the area: “Abbie is a fantastic representative for Cramlington and we hope the sponsorship money goes a long way in helping her to achieve her dreams on the ice.”

Abbie, of Thornbury Avenue, added: “I’m incredibly grateful for the sponsorship from my local Wilko store and every penny will make a difference when it comes to buying new pieces of kit and funding my travel around the country.

“My family and friends are always so supportive but it’s comforting to know I’ve got the backing of a local business as well. I only hope I can make Cramlington proud.”
