Ignition fails to ignite

ORGANISERS of this weekend’s Ignition Festival 2011 have confirmed the event has now been cancelled.

Ticket holders have been told to send refund requests after the news filtered out over Wednesday and Thursday that the weekend of music would not go ahead.

Local bands including The Watchers, The Longsands and The Green Hour were set to share the line up with stars like Calvin Harris and Echo and the Bunnymen over Saturday and Sunday.

But Ignition Ltd confirmed today the gig was off, despite attempts to relocate it.

The company said in a statement: “With deepest regret we are now in a position to confirm that Ignition Festival 2011 will not be going ahead.

“Despite every effort to keep this going after this was cancelled yesterday by Newcastle racecourse.

“We would like to apologise for all of the inconvenience and upset caused to the people involved.

“We have full intention to reimburse all holders for the tickets purchased.

“Be assured no salaries or expenses have been drawn by directors or shareholders at any time.

“And although this is of no compensation, all involved will be taking a large financial loss.”

Newcastle Racecourse, where the event was due to be held, had acted as a ticket agent for the company, in addition to HMV and Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club, own the venue on which the event was to take place.

In a statement on the Racecourse’s website it said: ‘Ignition Festival Ltd, a Jesmond based company run by Directors Simon Curtis, Ashley Spence & Daniel Clark had given event partners assurances that the festival would go ahead as planned, only to pull out at the eleventh hour.’

Simon Lane, Executive Director of Newcastle Racecourse, said: “It is bitterly disappointing for all concerned that the Ignition Festival has been cancelled at such short notice by its organisers Ignition Festival Ltd.

“It is galling to have our hard work, good faith and the expectations of thousands of music fans dispensed with in this manner, without so much as an apology.

“As the festival is an external event to the racecourse, run and managed by Ignition Festival Ltd, all enquiries including those with regard to ticket refunds should to be directed to that company, whose legal obligation it is to reimburse ticket holders.”

The News Post Leader would like to apologise to all those who entered the competition to win tickets for the event.
