Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery has praised a partnership between a Northumberland college and an employer in his constituency for creating careers for young people.
Northumberland College says its relationship with The All-in-One Company represents a blueprint for the future of apprenticeship training.
Stuart Cutforth, Principal and Chief Executive of Northumberland College, said that although future investment in south east Northumberland by big businesses was possible, small to medium sized enterprises like The All-in-one Company are essential to the prosperity of the area.
Ashington-based The All-in-One Company, which celebrates its fifth birthday this month, has been at the vanguard of onesie sleepsuits.
Kate Dawson, director of the firm, said: “We wanted to take on apprentices because there is a very real danger that traditional skills like cutting, sewing and embroidery will die out.”
Northumberland College’s dedicated business development team worked with Kate to create bespoke Level 2 and 3 Apprenticeships in textiles.
Kate added: “Putting together courses especially for us was just amazing, it means the training is bespoke just like our company.”
Ian Lavery re-visited the company recently to meet its apprentices and discover more about the partnership with Northumberland College.
He said skills gaps were being identified and tackled: “It’s giving young people opportunities they might not have had.”
