Lads and their dads proved to be a winning combination in a night of family teamwork at a Blyth academy.

Bede Academy in the town hosted its annual family sports evening during Healthy Living Week, with boys and their dads teaming up on the badminton courts while mums and daughters were put through their paces in the dance studio.

Around 30 pairs picked up racquets, with some of the dads returning to the sport for the first time in decades.

Director of sport Simon McAree said: “The younger students in particular like the chance to play alongside their parents, and badminton is a sport the whole family can play together.

“You can play indoors, and even the least sporty person can have a go.

“During Healthy Living Week we do a lot of activities based around exercise, nutrition and healthy minds.

“It’s important that students can put into practice at home what they learn in school, and that means getting parents on board as well.”

Dad Alan Watson, who was playing with his son Jack, 11, said: “I haven’t played in about 25 years.

“We like playing table tennis but badminton’s a good way to play together as a team.”
