A young woman from Ashington is gearing up to raise money for charity in memory of a dear friend.
Rachel Dodds died at her home in First Row, Ellington, on Tuesday, May 21, just 17 days after she was diagnosed with cancer, aged 29.
Now Lauren Barrett is taking part in running events in Rachel’s memory and to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The 24-year-old pharmacy technician will be running 16 miles on Friday, August 16, from the Boots store in Blyth to the store in North Shields.
Then she will be taking on the Great North Run on Sunday, September 15.
Last Sunday, Lauren, with the help of her sister Leanne, her boyfriend and Rachel’s brother Shaun, and Rachel’s cousin David Lynn, also decided to complete the Norse 10k Challenge, a gruelling obstacle course near Druridge Bay, despite it being cancelled at the last minute due to the rain.
So far, Lauren has raised over £2,900 for the charity.
She said: “A lot of people have said I’m really inspiring, but it is actually Rachel who is the inspiration.
“She was loved by so many people.”
