A DRIFTING boat led to a sea search off Newbiggin on Saturday night.
Newbiggin RNLI helmsman Ian Davison spotted an unknown object from the promenade and called on his colleagues Peter Leslie and Brandon Bushby to help investigate.
The trio headed out to sea on lifeboat CSMA 75th Anniversary and discovered the object was a partially submerged boat.
They spent an hour searching the area to ascertain that nobody was in the water before the coastguard stood down the search.
With the search cancelled the drifting boat was recovered by the lifeboat before being returning back to Newbiggin Bay.
Mr Davison said: “We were thorough in our search of the area and the crew on board were able to put into practice their lifeboat training.”
