A lifeboat station celebrated a special day in its 162-year history at the weekend with the naming of the new Atlantic 85 Richard Wake Burdon.

Hundreds gathered at the boathouse in Newbiggin to take part in the ceremony.

Cheryl Robinson, on behalf of the late Hylton Burdon, officially named the lifeboat, which was received by Commodore David Squire of the RNLI.

He then handed over the lifeboat to lifeboat operations manager Pauline Cooksey at the station.

The Reverend Peter Sinclair, Vicar of Woodhorn and Newbiggin, lead the service of dedication.

The naming ceremony was also a surprise gathering of relatives of the Burdon family.

Pauline said: “The ceremony provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the naming of a new lifeboat but also to facilitate a gathering of lost family members.”
