The victory saw the Colliers maintain top spot in the Go North East Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League A1 division and still have a 15 points cushion over second placed Lanchester who picked up a maximum victory over Annfield Plain.

McCafferty went to the wicket with his side in trouble but the right hander went a long way to saving them, featuring in a partnership worth 118 with Ben Harmison: “We were 48-3 when I went to the crease and it was a difficult time to go in,” said the 25 year old,

“So to say I was over the moon and happy after emerging with my first hundred for the club would be an understatement.

“For me, apart form having to graft hard, the straight six which I put over the top of the pavilion roof was the highlight of my innings - then I kicked on near the end to get my century.

“Batting was not easy but I enjoyed being out in the middle with Ben [Harmison] and we put on a good partnership.

“Ben is a good player and he talked me through my innings and I was disappointed that he did not get a 50 himself because he deserved one.”

Ashington-born McCafferty added: “It was a great win for us

“The lads are flying and it’s a good team to be a part of.”
