Memberships rise at leisure centres
Investment in leisure centres at Ashington and Cramlington has paid off, with new figures showing large increases in the number of memberships.
Active Northumberland, which manages all leisure facilities on behalf of Northumberland County Council, has reported a year-on-year increase in memberships since taking over.
More than £40million has also been invested into improving leisure centres and facilities.
Memberships more than tripled in Ashington, where Active Northumberland invested £20million into the leisure centre, alongside £1million of funding secured from Sport England.
Similarly in Cramlington, where the Concordia leisure centre benefitted from a total investment of £4.4million, memberships rose by 42 per cent, to 1,185 this year.
Other investment in leisure facilities this year includes £650,000 at Waterworld in Prudhoe, £600,000 at Newbiggin Leisure Centre and £150,000 at Ponteland Leisure Centre.
There have also been a variety of smaller projects in all the centres across the county, including new state-of-the-art gym equipment, with further investment planned for 2017.
It is worth noting that Active Northumberland changed its pricing structure at the start of last month, so it remains to be seen what impact this may have on memberships moving forward.
Chief executive Lorraine Dewison said: “We’re delighted to see that more and more people are taking advantage of the great leisure facilities in our county.
“These figures show that investing in our services is having a big impact. We have plans on the horizon to invest even more across all our centres in Northumberland.
“Active Northumberland membership offers great value for money and these new figures show that more and more people are starting to see the benefits.
“For anyone visiting their leisure centre more than twice a week, becoming a member is a great way to save money.”
Active Northumberland membership costs from £32 per month and gives members unlimited access countywide.
