It has taken almost 100 years, but at last Ashington has a war memorial which befits the fallen of our district.
I think a big thank you is in order to all of those involved in transforming the library garden into a memorial park, it’s beautiful.
Both of my grandfathers fought in the Great War, and I am myself an ex-serviceman, so the recognition of the sacrifices made by our armed forces means a lot to me.
I am also very pleased that there was a very good public turn out in Ashington on Remembrance Sunday, despite the foul weather. It is clear that the public still cares about our veterans, even if some politicians don’t.
Now that we have a decent war memorial in Ashington, I hope it will be shown some respect.
