A bid to extract an extra 164,000 tonnes of coal from a surface mine looks set to get the go-ahead next week.
An application has been submitted to Northumberland County Council to extract the additional coal as well as 50,000 tonnes of brickshale from a north-western extension to the existing Potland Burn surface mine, to the north-west of Ashington.
The coal extracted would be exported from the site by rail from the existing loading facility and the completion of coaling would be achieved by December 22 this year as required by the current planning permission.
The plans have not sparked any objections, but 73 letters of support for the scheme have been received, which highlight the retention of employment at the site and that the additional extraction would not alter the completion date of the site.
The council’s strategic planning committee is recommended to approve the application on Tuesday.
