A father and son are set to go Monte Carlo or bust for the drive of their lives as they prepare to travel thousands of miles.
Stuart Hatch and his son Andrew will be setting off from Blyth next week to take part in the 2013 Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally to raise money for the Marfan Association and the Ménière’s Society.
The duo, Team 8bit Pair, will burn rubber over 2,500 miles to Monte Carlo and back via France, Switzerland and Italy.
Stuart, 66, from Blyth, and Andrew, 35, from Darlington, were challenged to buy a ‘banger’ car – selecting a 1998 Citreon Xsara VTR – for less than £250.
And they will take part against more than 70 other competitors in a series of challenges along the way, earning points and prizes in the process.
Stuart said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do the nearest thing possible to the real Monte Carlo Rally.
“The Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally 2013 is actually more an extended treasure hunt than a real rally as there are no special stages and certainly no racing.
“That said, there are tasks to complete and prizes to be won, and as a competitive team we’re in it to win it.
“But win or lose, we intend to give our respective charities a welcome boost to their funds, that’s our main aim.”
