Motorcyclist seriously injured in crash in Northumberland

A man was airlifted to hospital yesterday after a crash between a car and a motorbike in Northumberland.

At 4.20pm yesterday, police received a report that a Suzuki Grand Vitara and a Honda CBR 1000 motorcycle had been involved in a collision on the northbound carriageway of the A696 between Ponteland and Belsay, near to the Highlander pub.

Police and paramedics attended the scene and the motorcyclist, a 31-year-old man, was taken to the RVI hospital in Newcastle by the Great North Air Ambulance for treatment to a serious head injury. He remains in hospital. Upon arrival, his injuries were described as critical/life-threatening, but he was in a stable condition.

A section of the A696 was closed for around three-and-a-half hours for collision investigation to take place. Inquiries are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Motor Patrols police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference number 815 12/06/15.
