Mum fined for buying kids booze

A parent has been fined by police after being caught on CCTV buying alcohol for children.

Officers in Cramlington got information via the Shopwatch scheme that there was a group of youths drinking alcohol in the Seven Oaks Park area of the town.

A total of 20 bottles of beer were seized and the youths were taken home and their parents spoken to.

Subsequent enquiries led to officers viewing CCTV footage.

It showed one of the children’s parents buying alcohol for the youngsters from a nearby supermarket.

She was given an £80 fixed penalty notice for buying alcohol for children.

Cramlington Neighbourhood Sergeant Mick Aspey said: “We will always take action when we find that adults have been buying alcohol for children.

“By giving children alcohol they are potentially putting them in danger and making them vulnerable.

“Also, children under the influence of alcohol are more likely to be involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.

“We have done some work recently that shows the majority of alcohol we seize from children has been purchased by parents.

“I’d warn them against doing this – they could be putting their children at risk and they face having action taken against them by police.”
