A mother who has helped to raise more than £300,000 for the children’s heart unit that saved her son’s life, has been honoured with an award.

Nadine Hollingsworth, from Monkseaton, and her husband Ivan, have raised £317,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (Chuf) at the Freeman Hospital, after they saved their son Seb’s life.

Seb was born five years ago with Tetralogy of Fallot and had to undergo open heart heart surgery within hours of being born.

Since then Nadine and Ivan have raised money for the unit to buy life saving equipment and a playroom.

And now Nadine, who was an Olympic torchbearer, has been rewarded for her effords, with a Halifax Giving Extra Award, after being nominated by her friend Sarah Jones.

Sarah, who nominated Nadine said: “Nadine is an inspiration, she never stops raising money and awareness for this charity.

“The courage she has shown and the comfort they have given to other heart parents never ceases to amaze me.”

Nadine added: “I can’t believe I’ve won the local round.

“Now all the local winners get put forward for the regional round and the winner of that goes through to the national – it’s very exciting.”
