Community development officer Christine Nicholls has been named a national Heat Hero for her tireless work helping people in fuel poverty.

Christine, who works part-time at Community Action Northumberland, is so dedicated to her work that she often attends training and events in her own time, even on Christmas Day.

Her hard work has seen her help more than 6,100 people, and her idea for a Warm Hubs project is being considered for national roll-out.

She has also supported the Central Heating Fund and other schemes, and is now planning to work with young people on energy forums to help them take action on fuel poverty in the area and make a difference to their community.

The awards scheme is run by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA) in partnership with ScottishPower.

NEA chief executive Jenny Saunders said: “Christine has gone above and beyond to help vulnerable people to heat their homes across Northumberland.

“We had a record number of entries this year, but Christine was one of those who really stood out.”

Christine will be presented with her Heat Heroes award at a ceremony in the House of Commons in September.
