National spotlight on Northumberland's tenant involvement

Northumberland County Council's ground-breaking work around tenant involvement was the focus of attention at the National Tenants Conference in Blackpool.

Representatives from the council and the Tenant Forum were invited to speak about the new Tenants Voice sub-committee that had been set up. The committee, the first of its kind in the country, is made up of four tenants and four councillors and gives tenants a seat at the table with key decision-makers and a direct voice and influence over decisions affecting housing services.

Northumberland County Council's cabinet member responsible for housing, Allan Hepple, resident involvement manage Amanda Mason and representatives from the Tenant Voice and Tenant Forum attended the conference.

Coun Hepple said: "We gave two workshops focussing on how the council has welcomed and embraced tenant involvement since it took over the management of the council housing service. It was great to tell our story and share our experiences with other tenants from across the country, many of whom are facing similar changes and challenges."

The conference was organised by the Northern Housing Consortium.
