A new playground has been officially opened in Cramlington.

The new facility at Eastfield playing fields has been provided by Cramlington Town Council at a cost of £60,000 with the support of a £20,000 grant from Northumberland County Council.

This is the latest scheme to be undertaken by the town council as part of its refurbishment programme aimed at modernising all Cramlington playgrounds.

The equipment was supplied by The Play Practice and installed by Cramlington-based company RHD Construction.

Coun Laura Pidcock said: “A new playground for the ward was a key priority for Coun Trevor Amrbose and I following our election last year.

“It will replace the Alderley Way playground and provide a much better and safer facility for local children.

“When the town council took over responsibility for playgrounds it was clear that they had suffered from years of neglect and under-funding.

“Consequently, many of the playgrounds were simply not used and repair and maintenance costs were a constant headache.

“This new facility will provide first rate play facilities and significantly reduce our maintenance bill.”

The council has now completed the refurbishment of playgrounds at Margorie Street, Chichester Avenue, Nelson Avenue, Norwich Way and East Hartford. Work will commence on the Horton Park play area on February 11.
