After starting in January as a result of many requests from people in Newbiggin, Choir By The Sea has really taken off.
Sessions are held on Thursdays in St Bartholomew’s Church Centre from 7pm to 9pm – singing goes on until 8.30pm then members socialise with coffee or tea and biscuits or cupcakes.
More than 45 people are now attending each rehearsal and over 70 people are on its books as members. No audition or voice test is necessary.
The choir welcomes all ages and abilities from age 16 upwards who are enthusiastic about singing and committed to improve their individual and group performance.
Its leader is Gillian Storey, who has worked with many choirs over the years and is keen to promote enjoyment and social inclusion through singing.
She said: “Singing has so many physical benefits for health and mindfulness, as well as being a valuable vehicle for making new friends and having fun.
“Come along one Thursday night and see if our choir’s for you. We sing a range of songs – from gospel and pop to rock and the classics.
“I am sure you will enjoy the range of songs we do. Everyone will make you very welcome.
“We are also looking to occasionally perform in the community and help raise funds for various charities.”
There is a small subscription of £3 each rehearsal to cover the cost of venue hire and refreshments.
