An allotment project aimed at the over 50s has been launched in south east Northumberland.

Groundwork North East has started the new initiative in partnership with Age UK Northumberland after securing a grant from the Big Lottery’s Target: Wellbeing programme to deliver weekly sessions on Thursday mornings over the next two years.

These will involve growing flowers, fruit and vegetables, apple pressing, campfire cooking, bird box making, candle making and many other activities.

Groundwork has been developing a site with support from TDB Training and volunteers to install raised beds, seating, paths and a large polytunnel, and the Friends of Ashington Woods Group have donated picnic benches.

Leanne Shipley, from Groundwork, said: “We are really looking forwards to delivering this project.

“It is a great opportunity for local people to get involved in their community, make new friends, enjoy their outdoor space and get into gardening.”

Activity sessions will take place every Thursday between 10am and noon.
