Steve Harmison, Ben Harmison and Mark Wood - three players who started their careers by coming through the ranks at Langwell Crescent - joined forces to cut the ribbon on the new facility.

Stephen Harmison said: “The facility is great and it is something which Ashington have needed to take the next step forward.

“If you look at what this club have developed in the last 15 years - Minor Counties players, first class cricketers and Ashes winners - with a concrete strip and little grass nets, the ground deserves something like.

“The facility gives to the community an opportunity for the kids to practice in good facilities and in a certain way as well ie with bowling machines and one-to- one coaching in an exclusive area.

“But it’s not just for juniors or seniors it’s for everybody. There are kids on this field here which potentially could be the next Ben Harmison, Mark Wood or Steve Harmison to go and play first class cricket - and that’s what we want.

“The committee have been great with forward thinking and there are great volunteers at this club including Adam Nichol and Mick Brown.

“Adam for the organisation which he does and Mick - who is the groundsman - because this place is immaculate now – it is the best I have seen it looking in the last 15 years.

“The new facility is what was needed at this club and it will enhance the chances of kids as well as adults to get better and better.

“Ashington Cricket Club are now in the best place they have been both on and off the field for the last ten years plus and a lot of that is down to the organisation.

“A practice facility like this can only help make the next generation of first class cricketers and Ashes winners and I think the most important thing for this cricket club is to make sure the next one is not too far away. Having a facility like this is what is expected now so thanks to everyone involved in the project including the funders.

“Ashington Cricket Club has to keep evolving and fingers crossed they will.”
