Nick Dunn, who endured a four-year ordeal in an Indian jail on weapons charges before being acquitted and returning home to Ashington in December, was at Ashington FC’s match against Whitley Bay last weekend.
He and his family were invited to Woodhorn Lane as guests of the club and cheered the Colliers to a 3-2 win.
Nick said: “It was a tremendous victory for Ashington. They’ve been on a poor run this year but I honestly believed I would bring them joy and they would win.
“I’m definitely going to return to watch them. It’s been a good day for my family and myself.”
His sister Lisa, who campaigned tirelessly for his release, said: “A massive thank-you to all at Ashington FC for the invite.
“It’s been a lovely day and it just reinforces all of the support the community have had for Nick, so we can’t thank the club enough.”
