A Northumberland American football team is making a play for charity funds in a 120-day challenge.

Northumberland Lightning head coach Mal Ditcham came up with the idea to support five good causes – Bradley’s Smile Trust, Princess Ellie’s Trust, Nathan’s Needs, John Joseph’s Journey and Melanie’s Mission.

And already £1,571 has been collected.

The latest fund-raisers have included committee member and former player Kevin Randall walking the Northumberland Coastal Route, covering 62 miles over three-and-a-half days.

Then offensive co-ordinator Chris Young, wife Katy, player Graeme Fowler and his wife and committee member Samantha conquered the Gung-Ho 5k obstacle course at Newcastle Racecourse.

And Mal Ditchum and players Tom McKale, John Bond, Ross Conley, Michael Raven, Liam Allen, Paul Blackburn and Graeme Fowler completed the Great North 10k in full American football kit.

The team is still raising funds, with more events planned. Donate online at https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/NorthumberlandLightning
