O'Brien delighted with his start to the season

Ashington Cricket Club batsman Ben O'Brien will celebrate his 27th birthday at the end of the month '“ but he has already received a welcome present three weeks into the new Go North East Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League season.

After four innings, three in the league and one in the cup, Newcastle-born O’Brien has an incredible average of 194 with unbeaten scores of 52 (v Benwell & Walbottle), 42 (v Tynedale), 31 (v Percy Main) and 69 (v Annfield Plain).

“This is my best ever start to a season,” he said.

“I’m happy with my form and to have four ‘red inkers’ is pretty good.

“I have practised since early January and it was good using the facilities at the new Ashington Leisure Centre, which has helped a lot.”

The Ulgham-based right hander added: “It’s great to be in a winning side with a good group of lads and we’ve got an excellent team spirit.

“We are doing really well at the moment and will be hoping to keeps things going on a weekly basis.”
