A PARISH council has stepped in to save a school breakfast club which was in danger of closing.

A lack of funds had put the Bedlingtonshire Junior High School club under threat.

However, East Bedlington Parish Council has presented a cheque for £500 to help keep the club going.

Coun Colin Parker said: “The parish was delighted to help out such a worthwhile cause, but it is sad schools have to rely on donations from parish councils instead of receiving proper funding.”

Staff at the school wrote to the parish council asking if there was any funding available.

Primary unit co-ordinator Lynne Mellor said: “We are absolutely delighted with this kind donation from Bedlington Parish Council.

“The breakfast club is one of the real strengths of the school and this money will ensure it continues well into next year and beyond.”

Coun Park paid a visit to the school to hand over the donation.
