PARKING: Killing our main asset

editorial image

I was astonished to read that Northumberland County Council is planning to charge for parking at Blyth beach car parks.

Is it determined to destroy the sea front as it quickly becomes a place to avoid rather than visit with families and friends?

Has it given any thought to the residents of South Beach and South Shore, who will become embroiled in parking wars when visitors trawl the area for free parking?

Are there plans to make these estates residents-only parking by means of permits being issued and appropriate signage being installed?

The town centre is all but dead. Now the council seems determined to kill Blyth’s biggest asset, its beach front and surrounding amenities.

Morpeth has removed its parking charges to encourage people to visit, what chance does Blyth have for future regenerative plans if these charges are brought in?

The council should give very serious thought to removing its fingers from the destruct button.
