The woman behind a club for adults with learning difficulties has been named as a volunteer of the year in an annual awards ceremony.

Pauline Thompson, from the Alligator Klub in Ashington, was voted ‘Volunteer of the Year’ at the Newcastle Building Society ‘Cornerstone Awards’ at Linden Hall.

And Ashington Town Mayor Ely Turnbull surprised the Alligator Klub when he called in with other town council colleagues to congratulate Pauline.

Pauline was named because of the work she does at the Alligator Klub, alongside her work with other charities such as at the Ashington Branch of Wansbeck Valley Food Bank, which was also nominated and shortlisted on the night, and her role as chair of directors at Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project.

Apart from being a town councillor herself, she has time once a week to volunteer at the ‘Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company’ making props for their productions.

Linda Ilderton, who helps Pauline run the club, said: “Since Pauline started this ‘nightclub’ so many people have had the chance of getting out in the evening and enjoying themselves, with all the benefits it brings.”
