AN inquest has heard that Pc David Rathband was found hanging from the bannister of his home in Blyth on Wednesday evening.

Police attended the house in Heather Lea, Bebside, and when they failed to get a response they gained entry through a patio door.

North Tyneside Coroner Eric Armstrong opened and adjourned the inquest on Friday morning.

He said Inspector Dave Guthrie was on duty in the company of a sergeant when he received a radio message that police had received reports of concern for the welfare of Pc Rathband.

The inquest heard that Insp Guthrie went to the property with other officers.

On entering the building they found Pc Rathband.

The cause of death was pressure on the neck, a result of being hanged.

The inquest was adjourned until a further date.
