Blyth retailer checks out with national award win
A Blyth retailer has won a respected national award for his services to the community.
Shad Saleem, who runs two best-one independent stores – Poets Corner on Wordsworth Avenue and Plessey News on Plessey Road – won Bestway Wholesale’s Retail Development Awards 2019 ‘Community’ category.
He was awarded a £1,000 cheque prize at the London Marriott Hotel, Mayfair, London, by Paul Adams, Head of Sales & Development at best-one, along with Kim Reddick from Independent Retail News.
Shad was recognised for his outstanding efforts and achievements within his local area.
And it is not the first time Shad has been honoured for his commitment to his community. Last year, he was awarded the annual Rotarian of the Year Award in recognition of demonstrating ‘Service Above Self’ and significant contributions to community or international service.
Shad supports many local groups including Blyth Cricket Club, Rugby Club, the Empire School of Boxing, Blyth Charity Golf Day, Blyth Carnival, Malvin’s Close Primary Academy, St Claire Vets and the Great North Children’s Hospital.
Shad also helps with ongoing, day-to-day needs within the community. He is Trustee of the Blyth Food Bank, donating products from his shops and personally volunteering his time.
He also helped start a Breakfast Club at Malvin’s Close Primary Academy enabling 30 children to be given a proper breakfast.
Paul Adams, Head of Sales & Development at best-one, said: “Shad is an exceptional example of how an independent local retailer can make a real difference to the local community.
“His valuable contributions over the years have no doubt had a positive impact on many within Blyth; we’re proud to have him as part of the best-one family and to recognise him with this award.”
