New Deputy Lieutenants for Northumberland

A total of seven new Deputy Lieutenants have been appointed for Northumberland.

The role will see them support and assist the Duchess of Northumberland Jane Percy, in her position as Lord-Lieutenant, the Queen’s official representative for the county.

The new appointments have been announced as Janette Milburn from Amble, Meenu Malhotra from Ponteland, Willy Brown-Swinburne from Capheaton, Cami Davidson from Wooler, Rodrica Straker from Hexham, Julian Morrison-Bell from Bellingham and Fiona Lees-Millais from Haltwhistle.

They are taking up the positions to fill existing vacancies.

A spokesperson said: “Deputy Lieutenants are chosen by the Lord-Lieutenant, but they receive their commission only when official confirmation is received that Her Majesty the Queen does not ‘disapprove of the appointment’.

“They must live within the county, or within seven miles of the boundary, and they usually retain the appointment until the retirement age of 75.”The new appointments will join the existing group of highly committed and hugely capable deputy lieutenants to serve the residents of Northumberland.

The Duchess of Northumberland has been the Queen's ceremonial representative for Northumberland since 2009 and is the first woman who has ever been Lord Lieutenant of the county.

Her Grace, The Duchess of Northumberland said: “Each one has made significant contributions to local life and has deep roots within their community.

"I know they will contribute wonderfully, in their own individual way, to the role. I welcome their support and look forward to working with them.”

Among the current 22 Deputy Lieutenants are former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer and ex-Durham and England cricketer Steve Harmison.
